The Myanmar military states it has taken control of among the most notorious scam compounds on the border with Thailand, as it retakes crucial territory surrendered in the ongoing civil war.

KK Park, south of the frontier settlement of Myawaddy, has been associated with online fraud, cash cleaning and human trafficking for the previous five-year period.

Numerous individuals were attracted to the complex with guarantees of lucrative employment, and then compelled to run elaborate schemes, stealing substantial sums of dollars from affected individuals across the globe.

The military, long tainted by its connections to the scam business, now declares it has taken the compound as it extends control around Myawaddy, the main commercial route to Thailand.

Junta Advancement and Political Objectives

In recent weeks, the armed forces has driven back opposition fighters in multiple regions of Myanmar, attempting to increase the number of territories where it can conduct a scheduled election, starting in December.

It presently lacks authority over large swathes of the country, which has been fragmented by fighting since a government overthrow in February 2021.

The election has been rejected as a fraud by anti-junta elements who have pledged to prevent it in regions they control.

Beginnings and Growth of KK Park

KK Park commenced with a property arrangement in early 2020 to construct an commercial zone between the Karen National Union (KNU), the armed ethnic group which controls much of this area, and a little-known Hong Kong stock market firm, Huanya International.

Investigators think there are connections between Huanya and a notable Chinese underworld personality Wan Kuok Koi, better known as Broken Tooth, who has later invested in other deception hubs on the boundary.

The compound grew rapidly, and is easily observable from the Thai border of the frontier.

Those who managed to flee from it detail a brutal environment established on the thousands, many from African countries, who were held there, compelled to labor excessive periods, with mistreatment and beatings inflicted on those who did not manage to achieve targets.

Current Events and Claims

A announcement by the regime's information ministry stated its personnel had "secured" KK Park, releasing more than 2,000 employees there and seizing 30 of Elon Musk's Starlink satellite terminals – commonly employed by scam facilities on the border frontier for internet functions.

The declaration blamed what it described as the "terrorist" KNU and volunteer militia units, which have been opposing the junta since the coup, for unlawfully controlling the area.

The junta's claim to have shut down this notorious deception facility is probably directed at its key supporter, China.

Beijing has been pressuring the regime and the Thailand administration to increase efforts to end the illegal businesses run by Asian syndicates on their shared frontier.

Previously in the year thousands of Chinese workers were extracted of scam compounds and sent on arranged aircraft back to China, after Thai authorities restricted supply to power and petroleum provisions.

Broader Situation and Persistent Operations

But KK Park is only one of at least 30 similar facilities located on the boundary.

A large portion of these are under the guardianship of Karen paramilitary forces associated to the regime, and the majority are still active, with numerous individuals managing scams inside them.

In fact, the support of these armed units has been crucial in assisting the junta drive back the KNU and additional opposition organizations from land they took control of over the previous 24 months.

The armed forces now governs almost all of the road joining Myawaddy to the rest of Myanmar, a goal the regime established before it conducts the initial phase of the poll in December.

It has seized Lay Kay Kaw, a new town created for the KNU with Japan-based funding in 2015, a time when there had been expectations for permanent tranquility in the Karen region following a national peace agreement.

That represents a more important blow to the KNU than the capture of KK Park, from which it received a certain amount of funds, but where the majority of the financial advantages went to pro-junta paramilitary forces.

A knowledgeable insider has revealed that scam work is persisting in KK Park, and that it is likely the armed forces seized just a portion of the large-scale facility.

The insider also thinks Beijing is supplying the Burmese military inventories of Asian individuals it desires taken from the fraud compounds, and returned back to stand trial in China, which may account for why KK Park was attacked.
