A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.
The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
