The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Transition Comes After Mixed Response
The new appointee steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this organizational change through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had revealed the necessity for a more defined vision.
Ismailer expressed that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement echoes a comparable move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the complete text from Ismailer's announcement:
Team—
I understand you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a message, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative developers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to continue.”
With your dedication and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game playtest was informative. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the necessity for a clearer vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the feedback to heart and revamped the title with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To boost the outstanding advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. Following a period of discussions, he starts with us on the specified date.
Ben’s leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having dedicated the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to continue seeing the evolution of the game in the months to come.
David
